Since Eucalyptus Walrus is compatible with Amazon’s S3, it serves as a great service for storing tons of static content and data. Walrus – just as S3 – also has ACLs for data objects stored. With all the coolness of storing data in Walrus, we needed to figure out a way lessen the network load to Walrus due to multiple HTTP GET requests.

My MBP just freaked out on me a little.

I'd let the battery get pretty low, and had left the machine alone for about 15m. After plugging in, I couldn't bring it back up, and assumed I'd hit the hybernate point with the battery drain, so I hit the power button. Instead of coming back up from hybernate, it rebooted. Apparently it had arbitrarily shut itself down instead of going into hybernate.

Here's where it gets really weird though: When it came back up, a bunch of stuff was ganked. Personal stuff like the finder windows I had open and my dock were fine. But my system clock reset to 01/01/2008, AirPort had an exclaimation point in the menubar icon and didn't default to my network or know my password. And upon login, I got three dialog boxes asking connect permission for three processes I'd never heard of.


Unfortunately, I don't know the names of the processes because I F9'd to get a good look at all the dialog boxes at once (they were stacked), and when I hit F9 again, Exposé didn't close, so I tried ESC..which closed one of the dialog boxes! Hit F9 again, didn't work. Hit ESC, and another dialog box closed. Ditto for the 3rd one, and after they were gone, F9 finally worked for closing Exposé. But at that point, I'd lost all 3 dialog boxes.


So with ESC being the likely equivelent of answering NO to the allow each of those dialog boxes was asking me about, I've now denied connecting persmission to three processes, and I have no idea what they were.


Once I got out of there, I opened System Prefs and fixed the date and time, then checked around my computer and everything seems to be OK.


Haven't had time to run any diagnostics yet.

Hardware/Software Minimum Requirements:

512 Mb in addition to system memory requirements – the more the better. 1-2 Gb or more is strongly recommended for larger or more complex documents.

Before Installing Scribus

  • Install Ghostscript for Mac OSX – Ghostscript 8.60+ or newer is recommended. This is important for EPS, PS import and printing. You may also install this via MacPorts or Fink. The end result is the same.
  • This is beta software which is undergoing many code changes daily. While it is fairly stable and usable, caution is advised. It is not recommended yet for production use.

Installing

  • Simply download the Mac OSX dmg format file from Sourceforge, open it and drag the Scribus icon to the location of your choice. The dmg Finder window offers the default system Application directory. From there you may click on the icon and run Scribus.
  • The first launch of Scribus or when a new user launches Scribus will be much longer than usual. This is because Scribus is creating a cache file of your fonts. Later re-starts will be much quicker.

Additional Software

  • As of version 1.3.5, Scribus provides a new type of frame, called Render Frame. It allows the use of other programs to render their outpout in a Scribus document. To take full advantage of this feature, you need to install these programs. By default, Scribus is preconfigured to use LaTeX, Lilypond, POV-Ray, Graphviz, and Gnuplot.

There is a second way to launch Scribus: Console Mode. If you open Console.app from the Applications Utilities folder, you are able to see the output of Scribus on startup. This will give you information on the fonts discovered on startup, and list any issues found while starting.
